Canal Aventure recruit international volunteers for the organization of their events.
Selection criteria includes:
- Staff member and/or competitor recommendations,
- Prior event experience and outdoor experience,
- The ability to speak English and additional languages,
- Fitness level,
- The level of motivation and positive attitude.
Each event has approximately 10 volunteers who work closely with the management team. Volunteer training takes place 1-2 days before the event. Volunteers have many assignments: assist with competitor check-in, they are assigned to checkpoints and the bivouac to administer water and scorekeeping, they walk in order to “sweep” the course (by walking at the back of the pack in each stage), they check and control participants (which involves walking or riding in a vehicle to check on competitors on the itinerary). Many assignments will change throughout the event. The days can be long and the work intense at times.
Prior to the event, we provide specialized training in the areas of checkpoint procedures, camp procedures, emergency procedures, competitor relations, radio and satellite communications. The skills learned as a volunteer are interesting and various.
Volunteers are provided with accommodations and meals throughout the event (hotel accomodation before and after the event, including the Awards Banquet). Volunteers are also given an official race clothings.
